Two Steps Forward...One Step Back

Cooper continues to do well. He is eating great especially now that our technique is getting better. Luckily we get a chance to practice frequently. I took the night shift again last night. Everything went well except for one wardrobe/sheet change. I think it was Chris' payback for making him change a poopy diaper. Chris didn't quite get his diaper on tight enough so the next time Cooper peed it went all over his shirt, blanket and sheet. I'm still not very good at putting a shirt over the head and arms of a very squirmy infant.

Cooper seems to be having longer awake periods, usually after he eats. I read him all the Sandra Boynton books that grammie bought him yesterday. I'm not sure if he enjoys it yet but I did. Chris and I have been worried that we aren't paying enough attention to him because we try to put him in his crib when he is sleeping and he is pretty much always sleeping!! Chris called in an expert, his grandma, who raised five kids. She told him there are two types of babies, good babies and bad babies. She said we have a good baby and we should be thankful for it. I also asked my doctor and the NICU nurse when they called to check on us and they have assured us that it is normal.

It's been a week since I was released from the hospital. The bruises from all the various IVs and blood tests have almost healed and I seem to be getting stronger. I've been able to shower with out being totally exhausted afterward. I went to my regular doctor today to have my BP and Kidneys checked. The took more urine (it seems like all I ever talk about anymore is pee) to test the kidney function and adjusted my BP medicine. My BP was only 102 over 77 which could explain some of my light headedness and that's why they have lowered my dose of medcine. The step back is I also may have picked up an intestinal virus. I guess the norovirus has been going around town (that's the same one they get on cruise ships). So now I'm supposed to stay away from Cooper as much as possible so I don't give it to him. The doctor put me on a bland diet and said it should work it's way through in about 3 days.

Making FacesSince I'm supposed to stay away from Coop I don't have any new pictures today but here's a cute one of Chris and Cooper making faces at each other. Chris is a really great dad. He picked out this night light for Cooper's room. It projects star constellations on the walls and ceiling.

OK, where do I start. It's funny, so many of your stories sound similar to us. Yes, blow-outs. You will always get those. Giacomo had 3 on Thursday when he was at his Grandpas house. I found that Huggies are great and Luvs may be even better. They both have elastic in the leg but Luvs are higher in the back so they help with blowouts. Also, we learned when Giacomo was about 6 weeks ... make sure the penis is always pointing down into the diaper. That helps a lot with peeing out of the diaper. For late night bed changes, I found these bed pads that are super easy to get on & off & prevent a whole sheet change Ultimate Crib Sheet

When Giacomo was about 2 weeks old he pooped on me also with the diaper off. One day he actually spit up, peed and pooped all at the same time, without a diaper, on the changing table. That yellow poop is messy!

The nights are terrible. That is the nice thing about not breastfeeding, Chris can help. Unfortunately, I found it got worse before it got better. We had a ton of visitors during the days, which made it even worse. I almost had a mental breakdown around 4 weeks and then it seemed to start getting better. Now he is still up 2 times a night but it seems so much more managable.

I understand about feeling like you need to spend a ton of time with Cooper. Sometimes it's hard to know what to do. Don't forget, babies become easily overwhelmed so some downtime where he hangs out by himself is good...for both of you. He will get to a point where he will be sleeping less and want to play more. Giacomo just seems to be getting to this phase now. He actually wants to play all the time and rarely wants to hang out without me paying attention to him. Now I am afraid that I am spending too much time with him and that he won't learn to play independently! We just can't win! I also think he may be adjusting to me being gone during the day because of work. For 12 weeks, I was around 24 hours a day. It all works itself out.

Please call me if you want to talk. Don't forget, I just went through all that stuff myself so I can give you pointers or just listen when you feel like you need to vent.

Wow! You guys are definitely amongst us "anointed" now. You are experts! It gets better trust me. The poops get more regular (Dan is a 1030am man) and more smelly. (Sorry...) but much more manageable. You all used to laugh that I had a second graders poopie sense of humor and now that's all you can talk about!

Where did you get the awesome night light? Is it like the one we bought Dan at IKEA? I am very interested...

Thanks for the mommy advice. I'll have to get some of those Ultimate Crib Sheets. We're getting better with the blow outs...we just have to be better about make sure we get the diaper high enough in the back. It's hard sometimes when he's wiggling all over the place.

The nightlight came from Amazon. Here's the link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BNQC58?ie=UTF8&tag=chrisandemili-20&link_code=as3&camp=211189&creative=373489&creativeASIN=B000BNQC58

I like the one you got at Ikea for Dan. I checked their site but they don't sell them online. I can't wait until the new Ikea in Cincy is open.
